Mali has recently introduced its first solar-powered electric bus system in Bamako, marking a major step forward in sustainable urban transportation. Engineers designed buses equipped with solar panels and battery storage, allowing them to operate efficiently even in areas with limited electricity infrastructure.
The buses help reduce air pollution, lower fuel costs, and improve mobility in one of West Africa’s busiest cities. By integrating renewable energy with modern transit design, Mali is demonstrating how engineering solutions can meet both environmental and social needs.
Local engineers played a key role in the project, adapting vehicle designs to handle hot climates, dusty roads, and uneven terrain. The initiative also provides technical training for young engineers and mechanics, building expertise that will support future transportation innovations in the Sahel region.
This project highlights the growing impact of Sahara and Sahel engineers, proving that green, sustainable solutions are not just possible—they can be implemented at scale to improve everyday life.
